Abstract
The muscular strength and balance are the most deficient physical abilities of children with Down syndrome. Currently, very little studies were made specifically on the degree of using respective sensory system for children with Down syndrome to maintain their balance. The purposes of this study were to examine characteristics of balance and degree of the use of three sensory systems(vestibular, visual and somatosensory systems) in children with Down syndrome and find out the most problematic sensory system. The subjects were 20 children with Down syndrome aged 6-13 years. Computerized dynamic posturography(Equitest) was used to examine them. The findings of this study were as follows. First, children with Down syndrome had the low function of visual system and vestibular system, and especially, their function of vestibular system was significantly low. Consequently, many children had clinically typical vestibular and visual dysfunction. Second, in general, the older the children are, the better the ability to maintain the equilibrium is. However, the ability to maintain the equilibrium significantly varied in individuals even between the same aged children. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop an exercise program for enhancing the vestibular function which is the most problematic function regarding the three sensory systems of children with Down syndrome.
