Abstract

This research examined sensory organization and motor control of postural response in children with down syndrome and those with other forms of mental retardation(MR) and those without disabilities. Three age groups were studied: 8-9, 13-14, and 18+ year olds. Postural response characteristics were examined using computerized dynamic posturography(EquiTest). Results indicated that, for the sensory organization test composite equilibrium score, equilibrium scores for somatosensory and vestibular, vestibular ratio, and COG alignment in MR and down syndrome groups were lower than those of individuals without disabilities. For the motor control test, variability of latency in MR group was higher than that of individuals without disabilities. Age-related improvements of MR group, expecially down syndrome in postural stability were not uniform and depended upon the specific sensory condition. Overall, these results indicated that poor equilibrium and inappropriate postural response of MR and down syndrome groups may be related to using of inappropriate sensory integration for postural control with cognitive factors of attention and poor strategies of postural control.
