Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gait characteristics in children with Down Syndrome using the GaitRite System. Eighteen subjects(age: 8-10 years) with Down Syndrome(experimental group) and age matched normal children(control group) were recruited. Independent t-test was applied to compare the gait variables between the groups. The results showed that the experimental group were significantly decreased velocity, normalized velocity, step length, stride length, step/extremity ratio and swing time compared to the control group. The experimental group was significantly increased steps width and toe out angles compared to the control group. The experimental group were significantly decreased at midfoot(8, 9 and 10 trapezoids) in the peak time and at hindfoot in active area compared to the control group. The experimental group was significantly increased at midfoot in P*t compared to the control group. In conclusion, the children with Down Syndrome showed abnormal gait characteristics compared to normal children.
