Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate differences in psychological and physical health problems between parents of children with and without Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and examine the effect of physical activity behaviors on their health problems. The current study used the 2018 National Health Interview Survey data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Psychological health problems included anxiety and depression. Physical health problems included arthritis, back pain, diabetes, heart conditions, hypertension, neck pain, obesity, and low back pain. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that parents of children with ADHD showed significantly greater likelihoods of psychological and physical health problems than parents of children without ADHD. Moreover, parents of children with ADHD, who met the physical activity guideline (150mintues of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week), showed significantly less likelihood of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity than parents of children without ADHD. As the current study found that parents of children with ADHD had poor psychological and physical health, future studies are warranted to examine ways to promote their health. Physical activity may be beneficial for promoting their physical health.
