Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the current status of the Winter Paralympic Games focused on economic perspective and suggest policy direction in Korea. At this time, the importance of Winter Paralympic is increasing, there are lacking of the economic statistics for Winter Paralympic Gamens. In addition, a discussion of economic sector as well as in area of non-disabled and in area of people with disabilities is required to hold 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang successfully. The Winter Olympic Games organized by IOC and the Winter Paralympic Games by IPC show a notable difference between participation scale, competition periode, and events. It is confidently expected that 50,000 participants from 100 countries in 7 sports take part in Winter Olympic Games and 3,000 people from 50 countries in 6 sports participate in Winter Paralympic Games. The integrated Organizing Committee of both organization need a budget of 13,390.5 billion won for Winter Olympic Games. Most it is used for new stadium and repairs, expanding of access, facilities etc. One cause is a ambiguity of a clear economic criteria for the Host City or country. International Paralympic Committee is to continue to expand the elements of an economic perspective. It was identified with new opportunities in 2012 London Olympic Games. Also IPC holds a total assets of 6.6 billion won in 2014 which is obtained as a result of the expansion of marketing, sponsorship and fundraising. IPC has access to the commercialization. It is important that IPC would run to succeed on their own. In the long term, The urgent task for the development of the Winter Paralympic Games is a branding of Winter Paralympic Games. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Gangwondo, the Organizing Committee for 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympic Games, and Korean Paralympic Committee need a strategic and aggressive plan.
