Abstract
This study focused on examining the influences driven by the characteristics of the option itself: hedonic or utilitarian. In addition, this study examines the effect of option framing on consumer decision making about product options using the self-monitoring and purchase purpose as moderators. The study reveals that consumers prefer utilitarian options to hedonic options under additive option framing whereas hedonic options are preferred more under subtractive option framing similar to the results of Dhar and Wortenbroch (2000). And the asymmetric choice of option is found to be moderated by the self-monitoring and purchase purpose. That is, (1) In the gift-purchasing situation, consumers always prefer hedonic options regardless of the option framing. (2) The asymmetric choice of option is more clearly found in the consumers with lower self-monitoring.
