Abstract
Even if consumers explore informations carefully, evaluate alternatives and then reach to the most reasonable choice through the decision-making process, consumers are distressed by conflicting cognitive elements, such as a discrepancy between empirical evidence and past choice after purchase. These anxieties and psychological discomforts are referred to as the cognitive dissonance. In particular, because the selection of financial product directly and immediately affects the consumer through profit or loss, the financial product selection is the most important decision-making situations, and in this time, financial, consumers can experience significant cognitive dissonance. A number of theories in the literature put forth the cognitive dissonance experience in tangible product, but we lack systematic empirical evidence on the financial consumers who purchase financial product. The goal of this paper is to fill this gap. Our objective is to understand the behavior of financial consumers by confirming the relationship between the loyalty and the cognitive dissonance. For this purpose, we separate the financial product into two types, direct(stocks) and indirect(funds) investments and investigate the causing cognitive dissonance factors(the characteristics of the financial product, the investment tendency of the financial consumer, the knowledge about financial product, the diversity of alternatives) based upon the financial consumers who have transaction experience in both direct and indirect investment product. The results of this study are as follows. First, there are differences in the perception of the cognitive dissonance after transaction depending on the type of financial product, the perception of the cognitive dissonance in the direct investment product investors was higher than in the indirect investment product investors. Second, the perception of the cognitive dissonance in the risk-seeking tendency investors was higher than in the safe-seeking investors. Third, in the case of indirect investment product, investors with a low level of knowledge about fund show the higher perception of the cognitive dissonance comparing to investors with a high level. But, in the case of direct investment product, investors with a high level of knowledge about stocks show the higher perception of the cognitive dissonance comparing to investors with a low level. Fourth, the increase of the number of investment selection alternatives leads to the higher perception of the cognitive dissonance in transacting the financial product including direct and indirect investments. Finally, we analyze the relationship between the perceived cognitive dissonance and loyalty. We find that there is a negative relationship between the perceived cognitive dissonance and loyalty in the case of direct and indirect investment product, but statistically insignificant in the case of direct investment product. This study may make contribution to the literature that tries to apply cognitive dissonance theory to financial product consumer behavior by verifying that situation induced by cognitive dissonance reported from previous studies works in the same way in the post-purchase of financial product. On top of that, our findings suggest practical implications for the establishment of effective marketing communications strategy that can minimize the cognitive dissonance and increase loyalty and enable predicting financial consumer behavior in terms of financial marketers.
