Abstract

People are exposed to numerous stresses which lead to compensatory consumption such as shopping to cheer them up. Although online shopping has become popular, exploring the effect of the online retail therapy has not been done. Therefore, this research proposes to confirm the therapeutic effect of online retailing. The present study developed following research objectives. First, to determine the effect of the retail therapy on mood-regulation through the online shopping. Second, to find out the effect of the retail therapy on improving the self-esteem through online shopping. Third, to find out the therapeutic effect of online shopping retail therapy on improving the self-efficacy. The results can be summarized as follows: first, improvements were identified in negative and positive mood through online retail therapy, but there were no difference between the experiment group and the control group. Second, in the case of self-esteem, there were no online shopping therapeutic effects. Lastly, self-efficacy showed therapeutic effects on online retailing. The academic implications of this study is to identify the therapeutic effect of online shopping for the first time and to provide the insight of the online shopping as a psychotherapeutic method. Further, it provides some managerial insights for retailing. In the case of managing unsatisfied consumers, it is effective to offer online shopping therapy to relieve their anger. and online retail therapy can be included in psychotherapeutic methods to improve people’s self-efficacy.
