Abstract

This article examines the impact of externally imposed constraints on consumer choice using tasks similar to those employed in typical attraction effect studies. The attraction effect is typically demonstrated ina two-attribute space as a share increase for one item (the target) in the core choice set upon addition of a third item (the decoy) that is similar to the target but dissimilar to the other core item (the competitor), creating an extended three-item choice set. Externally imposed constraints can be classified into extrinsic and intrinsic constraints; extrinsic constraints (as opposed to intrinsic constraints) are not consistent with the decision maker's choice process. This study reveals that the attraction effect persists when the intrinsic constraintsare imposed on the extended choice set, while it disappears when the extrinsic constraints are imposed. In addition, research findings indicate that the lone option effect is neutral when the intrinsic constraints are imposed on the extended choiceset, while it is negative when the extrinsic constraints are imposed. Theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed. Also, limitations of this study and future research areas are proposed.
