Abstract

Prior studies on consumers' emotion have focused just on emotion they experienced among many kinds of their emotion; consequently, they have defined emotion as a phenomenon which is at an extremely private and personal level and insisted that personal behavior is determined on the basis of the emotion they experienced. However, many sociologists indicate that emotion fails to be at the personal level but is experienced within a social relationship and that emotion which one experienced is expressed by means of verbal and nonverbal communication methods such as language, facial expression, gesture, and behavior. They also suggest that one may expect verbal and nonverbal responses from the other party through such a verbal or nonverbal expression. Therefore, this study sees consumers' emotion as a result of interaction in a social relationship, and aims to examine a verbal or nonverbal method in which a consumer can express to a salesperson many kinds of emotion he or she experienced in a store because of diverse causes and what verbal or nonverbal communication responses he or she can expect from the salesperson. For this purpose, qualitative method and frequency analysis were used. The qualitative research indicated that a consumer not only experiences many kinds of emotion because of diverse factors in a store but expresses the emotion and expects various communication responses from a salesperson through the expression. According to the result, customers don't just experience emotion, as suggested by the existing studies on emotion; rather, they express emotion experienced and expect an appropriate response from a salesperson through the expression. This study aims at offering an expanded framework of consumers' emotion in a shopping situation, examining a method of consumers' expressing emotion they experienced in detail, and thereby providing managerial implication about a salesperson' adaptive sales.
