Abstract
Although consumers have shown huge amount of interests on happiness, Korean society is collectively suffering from various kinds of anxieties that are consistently undermining happiness. Especially, we focused on ‘edu-poor’ phenomenon which is the outcome of a societal level anxiety. Despite its importance of filling the gap between this phenomenon and theory, we can find few consumer research on excessive educational expense and its underlying mechanism. For this purpose, we have conducted two studies with an integrative approach of qualitative and quantitative methods. In Study 1, in-depth interview was conducted to investigate the meaningful factors and their relationships. In study 2, survey was performed with 317 respondents to extend the results of study1. Study 2 employed a stratified sampling method to minimize potential confounding effects. The main results of this paper are as follows. First, social mobility perception affects positively consumer happiness. Respondents who reported low social mobility showed low level of happiness of life. Second, social mobility-happiness relationship is mediated by two aspects of social anxiety: one is based on education, the other is based on savings. Consumers who perceived their society as immobile, they felt higher level of educational anxiety and the anxiety about low savings rate, thus, these anxieties undermine consumer happiness. Considering the results of additional analyses, we can conclude that educational expense is based on anxiety and don’t have a positive effect on happiness, whereas savings anxiety is based on low level of savings. Third, self-complexity moderates social mobility-happiness relationship through two types of social anxieties. Fourth, consumers expect future social status of their children much higher than their ten year after status. Therefore, we can understand their educational expense as a ‘wishful coping behavior’ against current anxiety. Fifth, income and educational background were not significant factors on educational anxiety, whereas income had a positive effect on savings and decrease anxiety. This research provides some theoretical and practical implications. We extended the results of past studies on consumer happiness by employing societal level factors; effects of social mobility and social anxiety. We also provided psychological mechanisms of consumer behaviors that resulted in edu-poor phenomenon. This study suggested self-complexity as an individual strategy to enhance their happiness against social anxiety. Several methodological strength is also worth mentioning. We conducted two studies with an integrative approach of qualitative and quantitative methods. By doing so, we can explore the relationship among factors in a multilateral way. At the same time, we measured main factors such as social mobility and self-complexity with multiple measures to enhance internal validity. Limitations and future research ideas are also discussed.
