Abstract
As e-commerce becomes more generalized, consumers often encounter scarcity messages such as “only 50 products left!” or “only 3 days sale” when they purchase products or services in online shopping mall. The scarcity message indicates that there is a limited purchasing opportunity for the product or service and stimulates consumers' desire to purchase. However, previous researches of scarcity effect have not sufficiently considered the scarcity level that can be presented in scarcity message or the product type that can be distinguished by product attribute. So in this research, we investigated the effect of scarcity level on the purchase intention utilizing the Limited-quantity message among the type of scarcity message and the moderation role of product type. Also, in order to identify the mechanism by which these effects occur, we investigated the mediating role of ease of justification on the purchase intention, and investigated how the mediating effect of ease of justification vary with need for cognitive closure. The results showed that in the case of the hedonic product, the purchase intention is higher when a scarcity level is provided high than a scarcity level is provided low. But, in the case of the utilitarian product, the purchase intention is higher when a scarcity level is provided low than a scarcity level is provided high. Also, we verified that the effects of scarcity level and product type on the purchase intention is mediated by ease of justification, and the mediating effect of ease of justification is moderated by need for cognitive closure. The results of this study are meaningful that it provides a practical guidance in drawing up more effective scarcity message strategy according to the product type to the company in the future.
