Abstract

This paper presents a mediator that explains the underlying mechanism of the relationship between the presentation of pay-per-use plans and consumers’ preference. Prior research on reframed pay-per-use plans demonstrates that consumers prefer a reframed pay-per-use plan to a regular pay-per-use plan because of the difference in salient reference points. However, little attention has been directed to the psychological processes that explain why consumers prefer the reframed (vs. regular) pay-per-use plan. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the decoupling between the pleasure of consumption and the pain of payment can explain the influence of reframing a pay-per-use plan on consumers’ preference. The theoretical explanation is based on the fact that consumers evaluate the reframed pay-per-use plan by comparing their expected usage and the initial service allowance. Specifically, it is hypothesized that the decoupling between consumption and payment may occur because consumers psychologically set aside a requisite amount (i.e., initial allowance) in advance. We further expect that the decoupling perception explains why consumers prefer the reframed pay-per-use plan to the regular pay-per-use plan when the total cost is exactly the same between the regular and reframed pay-per-use plans. Study 1 tests consumers’ evaluation on an international voice plan. The results showed that the perceived decoupling was higher for the reframed pay-per-use plan than for the regular pay-per-use plan. Moreover, the decoupling perception mediated the influence of the pay-per-use presentation on consumers’ preference toward the plan. Study 2 tests the potential mediators suggested by prior literature in the context of smartphone data plan. The results indicated that the decoupling perception was the only significant mediator that explained the reframing effect.
