Abstract
The purpose of this research is to investigate how consumers judge the discount of a target product when exposed to multiple TPCs. We expect that the judgment of the target product will be influenced by the unrelevant discount information of other products (non-target products). Therefore, we hypothesized that the discount judgment of the target product will increase when spillover occurs due to the wider discount range of non-target products. To test this, we conducted a 2 (non-target product discount range: wider vs. narrower) × 2 (TPC: maximum discount vs. minimum discount) between-groups design in Study 1. Depending on the condition, the discount range for the non-target product was presented as wider or narrower than one for the target product, and with the different TPC. The results showed that in the minimum discount condition, perceiced discount size directionally increased when the non-target product discount range was wider, but purchase intention didn’t differ. In Study 2, we added the range discount condition as a baseline and also measured discount likelihood judgments and store visit intentions to confirm that spillover can affect a variety of perceptual and behavioral intentions of consumers. The study was conducted as a 2 (non-target product discount range: wider vs. narrower) x 3 (TPC: range vs. maximum vs. minimum) between-groups design. The results of the analysis showed the main effect of non-target product discount range, resulting in spillover to the target product when the surrounding discount range was wider, which increased the store visit intention, discount likelihood for the target product. We also found that the spillover effect was the largest for the minimum discount condition compared to the other conditions. This study suggests that in situations where TPCs are presented simultaneously, other nearby discount (non-target product discount) may influence the judgments of the target product. This study also suggests practitioners which type of tensile price claims and product placement are more effective in different situations.
