Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the adaptation process of elderly consumers to digital financial services amidst the paradigm shift in the financial industry. Unlike previous studies that have primarily focused on adoption or continued usage intentions, this study places emphasis on the adaptation process itself, taking into account the specific circumstances, contexts, and characteristics of elderly consumers. The analysis encompasses their perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, and evaluations. A focus group interview was conducted with ten elderly consumers aged 60 to 70 who had used mobile banking applications for more than six months. Grounded theory methodology was applied, following the procedures of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. In the axial coding stage, a paradigm model was utilized to identify the causal conditions (entry and choice factors), contextual conditions (internal and external inconveniences), intervening conditions (barriers and facilitators), four-stage strategic behaviors (willingness and efforts to adapt, selective use of financial services, internalization through repetitive practice, and active utilization of supportive resources such as people, channels, and tools), and outcomes (channel shift and service expansion, referred to as Shift + α). In the selective coding phase, “strategy” was identified as the core category. The key finding reveals that elderly consumers engage in a “selective adaptation” process as digital migrants when using mobile financial applications. Based on these results, a flow model illustrating the adaptation process was developed, highlighting how various barriers related to authentication, needs, systems, and support are overcome to facilitate adaptation. This study contributes to the literature by analyzing elderly consumers' adaptation to digital financial services as a dynamic and staged process, while considering not only external environmental factors but also the socioeconomic, psychological, and behavioral characteristics within the elderly population. The findings provide valuable implications for developing digital financial inclusion policies and service designs tailored to the needs of elderly consumers.
