Abstract
Recently, the number of sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) accidents, which are a phenomenon in which the braking effect isclearly lost along with the sudden unintended acceleration of a vehicle, has been steadily increasing, and this has become the centerof controversy worldwide. The point of the controversy is whether the suspected SUA accident was caused by a defect in the vehicleor by the driver's pedal error. In the case of a suspected SUA accident, the manufacturer collects the vehicle and determines thedisplacement of the driver's accelerator pedal and whether the driver pressed the brake based on the data stored in the Event Date Recoder(EDR) device, and notifies whether the vehicle has a defect, which is legally recognized. However, if the driver cannot prove that he/shepressed the brake pedal at the moment of the accident by installing a device such as a pedal camera, he/she must follow the manufacturer'sclaim, so it is common practice to consider the accident as caused by the driver's lack of experience. In addition, as the number ofcases in which sudden acceleration is claimed unconditionally in traffic accidents increases, it takes a long time to determine the truth. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to develop a solution to prove suspected SUA accidents that can accurately identify the actual causeof the accident. In order to prove a suspected SUA accident, the three most important things are 1. whether the brake pedal was pressedat the moment of the SUA accident, 2. whether the brake pedal was pressed hard enough rather than moderately, and 3. whether theaccelerator pedal was pressed or the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal were pressed at the same time. This requires verificationby the user themselves, and cannot be clearly proven simply by installing a pedal camera. In this paper, we propose a solution thatcan prove a suspected SUA accident by installing an IR camera, a 6-axis inertial sensor, and an OBD2 scanner, collecting the generatedmulti-sensor data, and providing reliable data. This provides the exact displacement amount of which pedal was pressed and how muchit moved at the moment of the accident through reliable numerical data and images, so it can clearly identify the cause of the accidentand provide satisfaction to drivers who are anxious about SUA accidents.
