Abstract
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have been increasingly utilized acrossvarious sectors, including the arts and culture field. Among these, chatbots have emerged as akey tool for providing information and facilitating communication with museum visitors. Thisstudy aims to analyze the motivations behind museum visitors’ use of chatbot services and tooffer insights applicable to the future development of AI technologies in cultural institutions. The data consist of 4,410 user utterances collected from chatbot interactions during two specialexhibitions held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea: MMCA LeeKun-hee Collection: Masterpieces of Korean Art and MMCA Lee Kun-hee Collection: LeeJung-seop. The utterances were categorized and analyzed based on chatbot usage motivationtypes. The analysis revealed that the majority of user utterances (85.1%) were driven byproductivity-related motivations, followed by social interaction (8.8%), novelty/curiosity (5.4%),and entertainment (0.7%). Compared to previous studies on chatbot usage motivation, thesefindings highlight the particularly strong desire among museum visitors for information-seekingand practical engagement. This suggests that, within the unique context of museums, chatbotsare primarily utilized as tools for accessing relevant information. Accordingly, the studyunderscores the need for future chatbot design to focus on expanding the depth and breadth ofexhibition-related content and response capabilities.
