초록
This thesis scrutinizes the love discourse in the three major cartoon periodicals, Shanghai Manhua(Shanghai Sketch), Shidai Manhua(Modern Sketch), and Manhua Shenghuo in the 1920's and 30's Modern China, continuing the “Cartoon Periodicals and Discourse of Love in the 1930’s China”(1). First, I examine the vocabularies and idioms of modern chinese regarding love and its related customs. Most of them are coined with the spread of love discourse, changing the culture, feeling of modern Chinese people. Secondly, the discourse of modern love is exclusively related to metropolitan city, modern women, and gradually naturalized the monogamy. While the heterosexual nuclear family gradually became the standard type of modern marriage and modern nation-state,various types of love ― bigamy, homosexuality, triangular love, or concubinage etc. In addition, the Sino-Japanese war made the customs and routines of love more conservative, confining women to home, reducing any social, political meaning of feminism. The meaning of love also contained negative meanings, such as moral hazard, license, or illicit connection. Overall, the love discourses in the comic periodicals of the 1930's China gave a birth to the “modern men” whose process was entangled with building a nation-state in modern times.
