The Real Romance of the Beijing Drifter in the Imaginary Space: Focused on the Film Us and Them

Among the various romance films in China, ‘An old flame’ has become the keyword of the talk of the town, with a series of hit movies about ‘An old flame’. Amid this trend of Chinese romance movies, Us and Them which was released across China on April 28, 2018, is also a romance film based on ‘An old flame’. However, Us and Them is a different type of romance from the previous hit ‘An old flame’ series. Us and Them which tells the story of more than a decade from meeting New Generation Migrant Workers who leave their hometowns and live toward their respective dreams in Beijing, to the beginning of romance, separation and reunion, reproduces the real romance of real world figures, not the imaginary world. Real romance is the union of a unique world among individual subjects through the emotional medium of love. Through these combinations, they explore and organize their specific nature, and they also experience a transformation of identity. Real romance also provides a crucial clue to the identity of a society. Thus, this paper will attempt to how real romance was reproduced in the film Us and Them, and examine the aspects of romance subjects' self-discovery process and the relationship between China's real society and individuals.
