Abstract
Text of abstract The genre of youth romance films depicts the daily lives, ideals and frustrations of young people in that period. Contemporary Chinese youth romance films focus on those born after the reform and opening up, who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. In other words, the portrayal of youth in these films reflects the socio-cultural changes in China since the reforms. Zhou Dongyu is an actress who made a strong impression as ‘the people's first love’ in her debut film, Under the Mountain Tree. Despite her various professional activities, Zhou Dongyu consistently delivers strong performances in the youth romance genre, which are inextricably linked to her youthful appearance and star persona. This paper therefore examines the meaning of contemporary Chinese youth representation, focusing on Chinese youth romance films from the 2010s in which Zhou Dongyu appeared. A star's ‘face’ is not just an image; it is an emotional image that encapsulates the envy and expectations of the public in each era. As reflections of the times, films and stars have historical implications, and the ‘face’ of an actor in youth romance movies stimulates contemporary affection. Zhou Dongyu's portrayal of youth, from “My Old Classmate”(2014) to “Better Days”(2019), illustrates the evolution of romantic ideals from the post-80 generation to the post-90 generation, leading to a critical reflection on Chinese reality
