Abstract

This paper aims to provide a multifaceted description of the notable specificities of the Shanghai Cultural Revolution. The description of the specificities of the Shanghai Cultural Revolution is intended to bring us a little closer to understanding the core and unique social contradictions of the Shanghai region during the Cultural Revolution. Since the 2000s, various research achievements on the Cultural Revolution have been accumulated, but there is still a strong tendency for a kind of centralism in the description of the Cultural Revolution, represented by Beijing and Shanghai. The term “centralism” refers to a narrative attitude that assumes that the Cultural Revolution that unfolded in Beijing and Shanghai has some kind of universality. However, it is difficult to approach the specific nature of the contradictions that gave rise to the conflicts and clashes that took place in each region during the Cultural Revolution using the universalized conceptual frameworks such as ‘紅五類 vs 黑五類’and ‘造反派 vs 保守派’. Therefore, the narrative of the Cultural Revolution needs to be rewritten with a focus on explaining the unique contradictions of each region, and this paper is part of an attempt to take a regional approach to the Cultural Revolution. Research on the Shanghai Cultural Revolution has been accumulated in a wide variety of forms. From Hunter's Shanghai Journal, which is the earliest record of the Cultural Revolution in Shanghai, to Li Xun(李遜)’s 󰡔革命造反年代: 上海文革運動史稿󰡕, which is the most extensive record, a wealth of records and research have been provided. These records and studies provide very concrete and individual facts about the Cultural Revolution in Shanghai, but they do not reveal the uniqueness of the Cultural Revolution in Shanghai and the specificity of the contradictions inherent in the conflicts by comparing the Cultural Revolution in Shanghai with the Cultural Revolution in Beijing or other regions. This paper will reveal some of the notable specificities of the Shanghai Cultural Revolution through a review of several unofficial publications and records in addition to the basic achievements on the Cultural Revolution in Shanghai that have been officially published so far, and thereby show how reckless it is to understand the Cultural Revolution in other parts of China based on the experiences and facts of Beijing or Shanghai.
