Abstract

This paper examines the formation and spread of ‘anti-China’ sentiment in South Korean society, analyzing it within the context of the affective politics of disgust in the post-globalization era across various glocal dimensions. It also explores the mechanisms of new media that operate behind this phenomenon. Through this analysis, the paper emphasizes that ‘anti-China’ sentiment is not merely a result of diplomatic conflicts or cultural disputes, but rather a phenomenon intensified by specific social and political contexts. The paper first explains the background in which ‘anti-China’ sentiment emerged prominently in South Korea. Following the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment controversy in 2016, relations between South Korea and China deteriorated, leading to a growing wave of negative perceptions toward China. This sentiment escalated dramatically with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which China was labeled as the origin of the virus. Additionally, cultural controversies such as the kimchi debate, the hanbok dispute, and the BTS award controversy further fueled anti-China sentiment, particularly among younger generations. This phenomenon went beyond simple anti-China feelings, evolving into a widespread emotional backlash that influenced political and social discourse. The paper highlights the close relationship between this anti-China sentiment and the characteristics of new media platforms. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok amplify provocative and controversial content through their algorithms, allowing such material to spread widely. In particular, some far-right YouTubers actively produce anti-China content to increase their subscriber count and advertising revenue, leveraging this sentiment for economic gain. In this process, anti-China sentiment is commodified, transforming from a simple emotion into a powerful affect that fuels political mobilization. The study emphasizes that anti-China sentiment is not just an emotional issue but a complex phenomenon that heightens social tension and exacerbates conflict. The author warns that if this hateful sentiment persists, it could threaten the democratic public sphere in South Korea and create unnecessary tension and distrust in international relations. Lastly, the paper calls for efforts to counteract this sentiment by improving new media algorithms and promoting greater cultural understanding and mutual respect. In conclusion, this paper underscores that anti-China sentiment is not merely a reaction of resentment or dissatisfaction but a structural phenomenon shaped and amplified by affective politics, affective economics, and new mediascape. It advocates for a critical understanding of this affect and strategic efforts to address it.
