초록

This study investigated the role of phonotactic knowledge in the perception and production of L2 sounds focusing on vowel insertion. The study also examined whether L2 learners’ pronunciation errors are related to perception ability. The study utilized two experiments to compare the perception patterns of Korean speakers and English speakers when perceiving single-consonant codas and two-member consonant clusters in English nonsense words, and two experiments to examine Korean speakers’ production patterns of those sounds. The percentages of correct answers given by the Korean speakers for the two perception experiments were significantly lower than the English speakers. The Korean speakers also had difficulty in perceiving the sounds in all the three syllable types. The Korean speakers often misperceived the syllables by inventing illusory vowels, but more often they ignored the existing vowels. Furthermore, the Korean speakers had more difficulty in perceiving a vowel inserted after the penultimate consonants in coda consonant clusters than a vowel inserted after the final consonant. In the production experiment, the percentage of vowel insertion errors was significantly higher in single-consonant codas and coda consonant clusters than in onset consonant clusters. Although the Korean speakers had difficulty in both L2 speech perception and production, they showed differences between perception and production in regard to three syllable types. In addition, the effects of voicing and manner of articulation of preceding consonants did not play the same role in perception and production. It seems that production errors in L2 speech are not directly related with perception difficulties. This asymmetry between perception and production suggests that speech perception and production are only loosely related on an abstract phonological level.
