Abstract
Recent diachronic studies (Macken and Salmons 1997; Holsinger 2000; Smith 2003) have determined that prosodic templates can be a basic organizing unit for the study of sound changes. This paper applies the prosodic template to the analysis of Old English /h/-deletion and provides additional evidence for the template and its role in Old English. I argue that the prosodic template is based on a bimoraic foot and imposed on the stem before all morphological operations begin. It is claimed that /h/ in OE is deleted when it stands outside the template, and that the deletion must be viewed as a template-sensitive phenomenon. In addition, I attempt to account for different behaviors of compounds with regard to /h/-deletion as well as variable patterns of /h/-deletion in the reduced second elements of compounds which have not been dealt with in previous works. By demonstrating the interaction between phonological rules and morphological operations, this paper offers a coherent account of the non-straightforward deletion patterns of compounds.
