Abstract
Metathesis is often discussed in the literature as an isolated or random process, mostly due to historical change. The usual scenario is to discuss an instance of metathesis in language X, possibly comparing this to similar data in related languages where there is no metathesis. However, seldom do we discuss the motivations for the application of metathesis. That is the aim of this paper. We will examine three cases of metathesis where the motivation for its application is to increase the weight of the base to which it applies, in one instance to comply with metrical requirements on alternating secondary stress, and in the other to accommodate a morphological requirement that the derived base be heavy. I will show that metathesis serves to produce these results in just those bases that possess the necessary preconditions to its application.
