초록

This paper argues that the Korean /n/-deletion is a consequence of the phonetic initial strengthening effect but not a simple consonant deletion in word-initial position. The Korean /n/-deletion appears to be peculiar since /n/ is deleted before [i] or [j] and in word-initial position, which is a phonologically strong position. In this paper, I propose that the Korean /n/-deletion is a consequence of denalisalization of the palatalized nasal [□] due to the prominent phonetic initial strengthening which leads to partial devoicing and nasal airflow reduction of initial consonants (Cho and Keating 2001). This proposal is based on the fact that nasals are easily denasalized without voicing and sufficient nasal airflow, and that the palatal nasal is articulatorily complex and easily subject to decomposition into [nasal] and [j]. The denasalization of word-initial [□] derives [j]. Accordingly, [□əl□m] ‘summer’ is realized as [jə□m] beginning with [j]. On the other hand, [□ima] ‘forehead’ is pronounced as [ima] not *[jima] due to the Korean phonotactic constraint which prohibits *[ji] and *[wu] sequences.
