Abstract
This study introduces dongsi, preserved in the Shinam Collection of Korea University Library. Dongsi is an anthology of exam poetry, compiled around 1876, which collects outstanding answers from examinations such as Seungbosi(陞補試) and Sahakhapje(四學合製) conducted between 1744 and 1774. Most works in dongsi include annotations specifying the examination year, type, examiner, and evaluation results. These annotations largely correspond to the information recorded in Ban Sang Gwa Si Jip(泮庠科詩集), a representative collection of the national examination’s papers. However, different or additional information not found in Ban Sang Gwa Si Jip are also present, confirming that dongsi was transcribed from various collections of national examination papers such as Ban Sang Gwa Si Jip. Dongsi contains 74 poems by 39 authors, generally in the form of 20-line exam poetry, which maintains a relatively loose application of level and oblique tone patterns. The content was predominantly literary rather than historical, with literary themes constituting the majority. Accordingly, dongsi can be understood as a source situated at the point where exam poetry circulated from official institutions to the private sphere. This aspect demonstrates the documentary value of dongsi and highlights its significance in the compilation and circulation of exam poetry anthologies in the late Joseon period. Furthermore, the literary preferences embedded in dongsi reveal aspects of how exam poetry was enjoyed during the late Joseon period.
