Objective:Studies have shown that patients with schizophrenia have slower and more variable inter-individual reaction times(RTs). Because RTs are determined by both cognitive and motor components, we conducted this study to determine which of these components is responsible for the slower RTs of patients with schizophrenia. We also aimed to explore the intra-individual variability of patients with schizophrenia in terms of their RTs for tasks. Methods:Controls and schizophrenics performed 25 sessions of RTs tasks of Vienna Test System. And their error rates, motor times and decision times are analyzed. Results:Decision times were significantly longer in patients with schizophrenia, whereas motor delays among patients with schizophrenia were not significantly different from those of normal controls. Both inter-individual and intra-individual variability were greater in patients with schizophrenia than in normal controls. We also found that the performance of patients with schizophrenia did not improve as the session proceeded. Conclusion:The cognitive component determines the longer RTs of patients with hizophrenia. Slowing, increased withinsubject variability, and an absence of learning effects were evident in the RTs of patients with schizophrenia.
