Abstract
This paper attempts to capture, through the lens of individualization, some new aspects of the increasing flexibility of labor market and the rise of new subpolitics of young nonregular workers in South Korea. In order to perform this task, I examine the concept of individualization in two theoretical contexts: Studies on East Asian individualization and the individualization- class debate between Beck and Will Atkinson. While the former constitutes the “cosmopolitan turn of social theory”, the latter opens a new avenue for a critical dialogue between individualization and class theories. Based on some insights provided by the theoretical examination, two novelties of South Korean labor are revealed. First, as a consequence of the increasing flexibility of labor, the category of wage workers comes to constitute temporary life experience in one’s career rather than a distinct class or occupational category. Second, new subpolitics are emerging from the crisis of the existing class organizations by young nonregular workers’ self-organized movements.
