Abstract
In Korea politics, the party polarization led by the major parties, the Democratic Party and the United Future Party, has accelerated substantially since the 2010s, even though the mass public remains moderate. Given this political environment, several political parties such as the People’s Party and the Bareunmirae Party settled in moderate ideologies. Despite that, they failed to acquire sufficient votes in recent elections. This article analyzes the political behaviors of the citizens who cast votes for the moderate third parties. Statistical analyses showed that voters who voted for major parties took into account the ideological gap between themselves and the parties most importantly, while those who voted for the moderate minor parties voted for the parties only if they felt the parties were ideologically distinct from major ones. In the case of cross-voting, there was a tendency to vote for moderate minor parties if voters were dissatisfied with the major parties they supported.
