Abstract

This paper structurally analyzes how mimesis and remediation comes into play and with what characteristics, in a communication environment using hybrid text. The research centers on George Gerbner’s communication model, Paul Ricoeur’s mimesis theory, and Jay David Bolter & Richard Grusin’s remediation theory in exploring the communication process of hybrid text. Mimesis is a process of creating something new, as opposed to simply making a copy, and remediation also implies a creative process of restructuring the mediated event. The concept of mimesis includes both the process of creation and the product resulting from the said creative process. Remediation is maintained through the double logic of immediacy and hypermediacy, and is also an important principle behind communication using hybrid text, along with mimesis. Hybrid text is created through the composition of heterogeneous symbols, and mimesis and remediation are the essential elements of its resultant communication process. In this process, mimesis and remediation hold various types of relationships - ‘circular causal-relationship,’ ‘total complementary-relationship’, and ‘emergent cooperation-relationship.’In particular, for hybrid text using digital a medium, the creative activity of mimesis through remediation allows the accumulation of knowledge and expansion of perspective for each generation. The present paper aims to assist in developing a new interpretation of mimesis in terms of communication design using digital mediums and a new approach for mimesis theory.
