Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze handicraft style which can be in an antipode of minimal tendency. Minimal design whose core value is functionalism has been developed mainly based on products of mass production in multinational enterprises. The phenomenon can be naturally interpreted by results responding to visual preference and sensitive changes, but it's based on the thought which considers some American values, values of design, as industrial and productive additive values. Totalitarian value which is extremely multinational and ignores individual sensitivity is required with individual differentiation by upward leveling of the whole world. Efforts to respond the requirement finally found Scandinavian style focusing on handcraft and differentiated sensitivity. This research analyzed relations with surrounded countries including Germany, national tendency, etc. which can be found in the process of Swedish modernism, a core of Scandinavian style, through the case of Svenskt Tenn. It suggests the three cases of Svenskt Tenn design's background of a formation, appearance of an European societies humanism in the 19th century, Swedish social democratic party carried forward a handicraft promotion, externally core spirit of “Der Deutsche werkbund” in the chapter two Also It suggests the modernism of the post-World War two. Estrid Ericson's viewpoint of the craft, and Joseph Frank's perspective of the art to attempt to new changes in the chapter three. In additions, it suggests the value of fusion in the craft and technical skill and completion with the inner and external desires to provide Svenskt Tenn's historical significance in his design in the chapter four.In short, it contributes to settle culture which makes an attempt on various design, breaking bounds of style based on pre-existing totalitarianism and value-free. I regard ,that is, it as meaningful in both historical and academical ways because of its perspective of the art which establishes “difference” or “honor” I highly valuated the taste of design performed by Svenskt Tenn in the research.
