프랭크 게리 작품의 조형성을 응용한 텍스타일 디자인 연구 -작품 제작을 중심으로-

독특한 구조와 왜곡된 형태, 다양한 재료의 결합을 시도하는 건축가 프랭크 게리(Frank O. Gehry)는 건축 및 디자인분야를 자유롭게 넘나들며 기존의 틀에서 벗어난 자율성을 추구하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 프랭크 게리 건축 프로젝트의 형태, 재료, 색상에서 보이는 조형적인 특성을 연구하고, 텍스타일 디자인의 모티프를 개발해서 다양한 소재와의병합을 통해 홈 퍼니싱(Home Furnishing) 용도로 사용 가능한 텍스타일 디자인 아트워크(Artwork)를 제작하는 데있다. 본 연구는 각종 문헌 자료를 분석해서 게리의 건축 철학과 작업 방식의 고찰을 선행한 후, 그의 작품 분석을 통해서 ‘파편화’, ‘유기적 구조’, ‘왜곡’을 키워드로 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘파편(Fragment)’, ‘움직임(Movement)’, ‘왜곡(Distortion)’을 주제로 선정하고 주제별로 각각 2 점씩 총 6 점의 아트워크를 제작했다. 프랭크 게리는 해체와파편화 과정을 통해서 건축물을 제작했고, 유기적인 곡선 형태로 율동감을 자아냈으며, 스케일의 과장과 형태의 왜곡으로 역동성을 담아냈다. 본 연구자는 위의 3 가지 주제를 토대로 시각적인 파편화, 자유로운 곡선의 조화, 주름의 왜곡된 형태 등 텍스타일 디자인의 다양한 모티프를 개발했고, 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅, 콜라주 등 여러 가지 기법과 소재를 적용하며 텍스타일 디자인 아트워크를 완성하였다. 본 연구는 프랭크 게리 건축물의 형태와 조형요소가 텍스타일 디자인의 모티프와 소재로 응용할 수 있고 이를 재해석해서 연구해 본 것에 연구의 의의가 있다.
Abstract
Frank O. Gehry is the leading architect who is known for the unique structure, distorted forms, and the use of various materials. Gehry pursues the freedom beyond existing framework by frequently crossing the boundaries of architecture and design. This study intended to study the formative characteristics reflected in the forms, materials, and colors of Gehry's architectural projects and to develop textile design motifs and combine them with various materials to produce a textile design artwork that can be used for home furnishings. First, literatures on Gehry's architecture were analyzed to examine his architectural philosophy and method of work. Gehry's works were characterized to derive three keywords such as ‘Fragmentation’, ‘Organic Structure’, and ‘Distortion.’ Themes for my textile artworks were selected based on the above keywords; ‘Fragment’, ‘Movement’, and ‘Distortion’, and two art works for each theme are developed and all together a total of 6 art pieces are created. Gehry built the buildings through the process of dissolution and fragmentation. He also created a sense of movement incorporating the organic curves and dynamics, through the exaggeration of scale, and distortion of form. Based on the above 3 themes, various textile design motifs such as visual fragmentation, free curves, and distorted forms in between creases are developed and these are combined with various techniques and materials. The study closely examines the idea that Frank O. Gehry's buildings’ characteristics using various materials can be applied to create textile design motifs and to inspire using the proper substrates for each art work. The study is also significant in that Gehry's work is reinterpreted into textile design.
