본 연구는 스칸디나비안 디자인의 근원과 개념, 표현특성에 대한 의문에서 출발하여 그 근간이 되는 스웨디쉬 모더니즘과 이 개념을 정립한 요제프 프랑크의 작품 분석을 연구 과제로 하였으며, 텍스타일 디자인 분석에 있어서 사회문화적, 지역적, 철학적 영역과의 통합적 관점의 필요성을 반영하여 연구를 진행하였다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 지역화된 모더니즘인 스웨디쉬 모더니즘의 관점에서 요제프 프랑크의 텍스타일 디자인을 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 스웨디쉬 모더니즘의 개념을 정립하고 표현특성을 도출하였으며, 이를 요제프 프랑크의 텍스타일 디자인에 적용하여 내적 의미와 특징을 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스웨디쉬 모더니즘은 스웨덴의 전통이 융합된 부드럽고 절충적인 스타일로, 인간중심적인 접근법을 가지고 있다. 둘째, 스웨디쉬 모더니즘은 부드러운 기능성, 중도적 절충성, 자율적 우연성, 디자인의 견실성의 표현특성을 갖는다. 셋째, 이를 분석지표로 하여 요제프 프랑크의 텍스타일 디자인에 내재된 의미와 특성을 연역한 결과, 자연과 인간을 배려하는 가치가 디자인에 내재되어 있음을 파악할 수 있었고, 단순화된 자연 모티프, 생태성을 반영한 임의 배치, 버내큘러 컬러 팔레트 수용의 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 텍스타일 분야의 연구범위를 확장하고 표현특성 분석의 접근법을 확립할 수 있는 이론 연구의 질적 기반을 마련하는데 의의를 두며, 이를 기반으로 구체적이고 다각적인 시각으로 텍스타일 디자인의 내적 의미를 고찰하는 새로운 해석의 패러다임이 구축되길 기대한다.
Abstract
This study began from initial questions of where Scandinavian design came from and what the concept or characteristics were in materializing it. Thus the subject of this study took the course to Swedish Modernism to look into the foundation of Scandinavian Modernism and researched the design philosophy of Josef frank who established the concept of Swedish Modernism. When it comes to textile design, since the integrated viewpoint encompassing socio-cultural, regional, and philosophical realm is highly desired, analyzing Josef Frank laid the groundwork for understanding localized Swedish modernism. The concept of Swedish Modernism has been defined, major traits of it have emerged, and the world of Josef Frank design has been unpacked throughout the research. The results of this study are as follows. First, Swedish Modernism is a gentle and eclectic style blending with Swedish tradition and has a human-centered approach. Secondly, tender functionality, moderate eclecticism, autonomous accidentalism, and sound design are the primary features in expression. Nature and human life is subtly considered in Josef Frank’s textiles and a few unique habits of his work are discovered such as using simplified natural motifs, their random ordering reflecting ecological traits, and accepting vernacular color palettes. The significance of this study lies in providing a qualitative base for forthcoming theoretical research proposing a new approach to analyze expressive characteristics of textile design and widening the scope of study. Ultimately, it is expected to build a new paradigm to contemplate and interpret intrinsic meanings of textile design with detailed and fresh views from diversified angles based on this study.
