Abstract

With the heightening interest toward convergence and consilience at both home and abroad, the development and application of convergence education officially started in Korea according to the structural reform plan of the Ministry of Education in 2014. The final goal of research focuses on the academic value and significance of design that has multidisciplinary characteristics, thereby designing and developing convergence education to generate creative ideas. The research reviewed the concept and flow of convergence education and the relationship with ideation education through previous studies, and examined 10 schools at home and 7 schools abroad to analyze the current status of design convergence education of 4-year universities at home and abroad. Korean universities have many convergence educations through connections with majors, while overseas universities frequently conduct undergraduate-oriented integrated education in the lower grades in spite of independent convergence education by university. This research aimed to figure out the current status and problems of universities at home and abroad, and discuss the values of convergence in design education. Through this, it proposed 3 directions that can be differentiated depending on the interest, necessity, and level of education demanders. The keys of 3 directions are ‘thinking, context, and innovation,’ which can be applied selectively according to a university’s educational purpose and requirement. ‘Thinking Convergence Education’ is the convergence of thinking-process for problem-solving; ‘Context Convergence Education’ is convergence to develop context by social demands and needs; and ‘Innovation Convergence Education’ is innovative convergence for creating new values or social phenomena that can predict future.
