Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the change of spectatorship in the appreciation of film and video installation art in terms of temporality. The research method is a comparative analysis of the experiences of seeing <Jeanne Dilelman>(1975, film) and <Woman Sitting Down After Killing>(2001, installation art) realized by Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Through this analysis, I would like to find out the difference of spectatorship between the two media. In the age of new media, the media itself has become more important in the creativity of art. In the case of upcycling the original artwork transiting another medium, even if the same moving image is used, the viewer's experience about time could be varied depending on the characteristic of media. In the midst of a rapid transition of the media environment in the 1990s, the video installation art showed the aspects of sharp change of the inherent temporality of film, while appropriating found footage of the film. Here, the new spectatorship emerged according to the special characteristic of each medium. Akerman appropriated the final sequence of <Jeanne Dielman> using as the material of moving image of the video installation art <Woman Sitting Down After Killing>. The video installation made the viewer perceive multiple temporalities by the way the moving images displayed on each screen simultaneously. The viewer's seeing showed the aspect of moving randomly between the seven multi screens researching the differences between images. As a result of analyzing the spectatorship of films and installation of Akerman, I could find out that the installation art showed an outstanding difference of spectatorship through the multiple points of view involving mobility of viewer in gallery space, and confirm the fact that this transition of installation art from the film could expand the temporality of it’s original.
