Abstract

Gaya relics excavated in eastern Jeonbuk Area have been understood to have expanded the Gaya forces in Gyeongsang and Yeongnam, which were adjacent to the area. However, as unique Gaya-style relics found only in this area were discovered, the Gaya forces, which were based on the eastern part of North Jeonbuk Area, were named as Jeonbuk Gaya in 2017. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the full ancient Gaya culture and art combined with the previously known Gaya cultural characteristics in Gyeongsang and Yeongnam regions, and to re-examine the cultural and artistic characteristics of ancient Korean history. This study aims to help understand and establish the nature and characteristics of Gaya culture by dedicating the formative characteristics of iron weapons excavated from Jangsu area Jeonbuk Gaya. The formative properties of iron weapons derive the formative principles and images through three stages of research methods: literature review, comparative analysis of artifacts, semiotic coupling and process, and semantic generation. The analysis targets are the iron weapons (iron spear, iron arrowhead, iron sword) of the early 5th to early 6th century, with the largest amount discovered in the long-lived areas of the Jinan Plateau and the surrounding Gaya region, where high iron culture existed. According to the analysis, the formative characteristics of iron weapons in Jangsu area are derived from the formative principles of similarity and difference, clarity, simplicity, firmness, organic interaction, and the formative image can be integrated into the 'dynamic' image. Thus, the formation of iron weapons in Jangsu area was formed through organic interaction with society, politics, nature, and people. So it is a symbol that captures the essence of heaven and earth people, which combines sensibility and respect other than function and political purpose, and it contains the meaning of unilateral thought that all things in the universe lead to a single principle.
