Abstract

In the recent years, it has become an upsurge to re-deconstruct and restate Chinese animated films based on folklore. In the era of globalization and the increasingly obvious typological trend of animation themes adapted from Chinese folklore stories, and in order to avoid content homogenization, “White Snake”, “Legend of Deification” and “Master Jigong” have been added with the role of animal collaborator on the basis of the original folklore stories, and injected with new quality showing the film director’s efforts to integrate and innovate tradition and modernity in the era of globalization. The purpose of this study is to show the function and practical significance of animal collaborators through their speaking and behavior of the animal collaborators in “White Snake”, “Legend of Deification” and “Master Jigong”. The research method is to analyze these three animation works based on Christopher Vogler’s role prototype, hero’s journey and role arc model to draw up a conclusion of narrative structure after the variation and the role arc of these three heroes of these three animation works. And then based on this, the role of animal collaborators is compared and analyzed in the narrative structure after the variation, and the psychological role in the hero role arc is compared and analyzed as well. By comparison with the animal characters in Hollywood animation, the lack of animal rights awareness of Chinese animal collaborators is analyzed too. Finally in the paper, by summarizing the similarities and differences of animal collaborators in “White Snake”, “Legend of Deification” and “Master Jigong”, some suggestions have been put forward on the creation of animal collaborators in the animation theme adapted from Chinese folklore story. Under globalization and the impact of western culture, it is expected that Chinese folklore stories can be developed with more diversity when they are adapted into animations, and that some theoretical basis for animation creators can be provided as well.
