Abstract
Kinetic art emerged with the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and became a wide art field to the point where it was overshadowed to divide the scope of modernization. This study is necessary to explore the possibility of expressing the playful movement of ceramics through the case analysis of kinetic artists in which playful movement is expressed. Kinetic art continues to make new attempts with more various methods and materials as technology advances, and materials with various physical properties such as metal, acrylic, fiber, paper, leather, etc. are actively used. However, the deformation of the shape due to high-temperature firing, which is one of the characteristics of ceramics, makes it difficult to implement movement using ceramics, and is not studied in depth compared to other materials, so the range of expressable movement is narrow. The purpose of this study is to propose the possibility of expressing the playful movement of ceramics by creatively implementing the movement of ceramics based on the examples investigated by considering the properties of these materials, and to further expand the scope of expression in both fields of kinetic art and ceramics. Johann Huazia and Friedrich Schiller, who studied play, say that play is an instinctive act that is the basis of human behavior based on spontaneity. As if to prove this, the movement of rides or toys in the playground that we experienced as children remains in our unconsciousness and instinctively feels play in the movement of kinetic art works. Therefore, the research method is to investigate the cases of kinetic artists that conform to the type of playful movement divided into three categories: inertia, elasticity, and rotation, and then analyze the movements expressed by them. Based on this content, we propose the possibility of expressable playful movement by setting the direction of the motion implementation method applicable to the ceramics. As a result of the study, attempts to broaden expression possibilities by applying playful movements to ceramics showed the possibility of expanding expression range, and development in both fields of ceramics and kinetic art can be expected by using ceramics, which are unfamiliar materials in kinetic art.
