Abstract
The aim of this research is to develop an expanded understanding and categorization of kineticity in sculpture and to examine how sculpture has incorporated and represented movement. It builds on the historical background of kinetic art, which has evolved beyond static forms to incorporate movement, time and change in space. The focus is on the inclusion and categorization of newer forms of work that are added to the existing categories of kinetic art, as well as an in-depth exploration of the possibilities for artistic experimentation and the scientific development of sculpture in motion. Originally limited to mechanical movement, kinetic art has gradually evolved into a variety of forms and methods through advances in technology, the sophistication of materials and the adventurous experimentation of artists. This study analyzes this development in detail and examines how kinetic art has arrived at a variety of forms of movement. In particular, it distinguishes four main forms of movement, based on natural force, electrical force, programming and augmented reality, and highlights the differences between them. In particular, it attempts to create a taxonomy that includes aspects that emerge in recent artworks, such as programming and augmented reality. The classification of programming includes the movement of machines using programs and the results they produce. The category of augmented reality is concerned with movements that take place in virtual worlds. These classifications emphasize that moving sculpture explores creative possibilities through the convergence of art, science and technology. Furthermore, these classifications and descriptions provide a stable metric for artists working with both physical and augmented reality. In summary, this thesis aims to contribute to the expansion of the field through an in-depth analysis of the present and future of kinetic art. It also broadens the debate on how the convergence of art, technology and science can open up deeper creative possibilities.
