Abstract

This study is on the coexistence effect of place specific art of the Art House Project, Honmura area, Naoshima island, Japan where the local nature and traditional culture coexist. The purpose of this study is to analyze several meanings derived out of the combination of a specific area of Naoshima and modern art, especially the interactions between place and art pieces, and the place specific attributes appearing on spaces. The Art House Project plan became the example showing how Kadoya, Minamidera and I-love Bathroom changed into art display spaces maintaining public place characteristics of Honmura where there were many deteriorated traditional houses. I, the researcher, look into how such economically declined Honmura changed to a place specific modern art place and how it emerged as a high value added economic site in terms of culture and art focusing on the characters and architectural spaces of place specific modern art that newly attracted modern art field, and coexistence effect between nature and community, which were all made as a result of the project. In detail, I, focusing on the local traditional culture, place specific art and work installation in the Art House Project, comprehensively analyze the issues of modern art and place specificity with such three study cases as Kadoya, Minamidera and I-love bathroom. First, I try to find out that Honmura grew in coexisting ways up to a cultural and artistic area by installation of place specific works and residents’ participation through the Art House Project. Second, based on such finding, I go for proving that modern art can be sustainable on the extended boundaries. Third, based on such examples of the Art House Project of Naoshima, I discourse on the point that the conditions of architecture, nature and creative art are showing the direction of contemporary art that communicate each other. The ‘Art House Project’ of Naoshima is a study on the effect of a positive example that learning, art and local place contribute to the discourse related with place specific art.
