캐릭터 의상 색채 분석을 통해서 본 스토리 전달 전략 분석 - 디즈니 애니메이션 <뮬란>과 <미녀와 야수>, <겨울왕국 1> 주인공 캐릭터를 중심으로

이 연구는 애니메이션 주인공 캐릭터 의상 색채 설정과 애니메이션 스토리 텔링의 연관성을 분석하는것을 목적으로 한다. 애니메이션의 색채 설정은 애니메이션 주제 표현과 줄거리 진행 도구로써 대단히중요하다. 하지만 주인공의 인종적 특징, 피부 색, 눈 색 등은 쉽게 바꿀 수 없는 고정되어진 색채이다. 그에 반하여 캐릭터들의 의상 같은 경우는 자유롭게 설정을 바꿀 수 있으며 정확한 목적을 가지고의상 색채 설정을 하여야 한다. 분석 모델이 된 애니메이션 영화와 캐릭터는 <뮬란>과 <미녀와 야수>, <겨울왕국 1> 이다. 세 작품 모두 여성이 주인공이며, 진취적인 성격과 위기를 해결 한 후 행복해진다. 하지만 의상 색채가 변하였을 때의 상황이 달라 비교하기 위해 선정하였다. 연구 방법은 다음과 같다. 해당 주인공들의 서사와 의상 색채가 변한 각각의 상황들을 연구 의상으로 설정하였고, 각상황에서 주인공들이 입은 의상의 상의, 하의, 장식 색채를 분류하였다. 이를 색채 이미지 연상표와 이미지 스케일을 통하여 각각의 의상 색채를 분석하였고, 색채 배색과 이미지 연상의 연관 관계도 분석하였다. 각 스토리 상황에 따른 의상 색채와 배색을 분석하였을 때 캐릭터의 성격 표현은 스토리 초반에만 국한되고, 이후에는 캐릭터 성격 보다 스토리에 따라 의상 색채 설정이 변경 되는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 영화에서 캐릭터의 성격 표현 보다 스토리 전달이 좀 더 중요하다 분석되었다. 물론 각각의상황으로만 의상 색채와 배색을 설정하는 것이 아니라, 전체적인 스토리와 캐릭터 설정, 상황 모든 것을 고려하며 설정해야할 것이다. 이러한 의상 색채 설정은 앞으로 애니메이션 뿐 아니라 웹툰, 광고, 유튜브 컨텐츠 등에 사용된다면 관객에게 보다 빠르고 쉽게 캐릭터와 스토리 이해를 도와줄 것으로보인다. 추후 또 다른 비교 연구를 더한다면 유의미한 연구 결과가 나올 것이라 사료된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the color selection of the main characters and storytelling in animation. Establishing a color scheme is an extremely important tool for guiding a viewer’s perception of an animation. While there is an immutable color scheme for the main character’s racial characteristics such as skin color and eye color, the color scheme of the main character’s clothing is easily modified for specific story purposes. The analysis models for this thesis are <Mulan>,<Beauty and the Beast>, and <Frozen>. They all have a female protagonist and they all have a happy ending after the resolution of a criss. They were chosen for this study because when certain situations changed, the color selection of their clothing changed, accordingly. The following is about how I conducted the study. The clothing worn by each of the main characters in the scenes when the most significant developments in the plots and narratives happened were selected as the subjects of the study. The color schemes of the tops, bottoms, and accessories worn by the main characters in each situation were classified. Each costume color was analyzed through a color image association table and an image scale. The relationship between color combination and image association was also analyzed. The study determined that in the beginning, the color schemes were used to express the personality of the main character, but then, they tended to change in accordance with the story arcs. My analysis is that it is more important to serve the plot of the story than to express the personality of the main character in movies. However, one should not only focus on individual situations when establishing a color scheme and color combinations, but also consider the overall story, character settings, and situations. The established color scheme is expected to help audiences understand characters and stories more quickly and easily. This is true not just for animations but also for webtoons, advertisements, and YouTube videos. I believe that future comparative studies of this type will to lead to significant and meaningful outcomes.
