Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the background and characteristics of American underground comics, and to study their influence on modern comics through their anti-social content. In the background of the birth of underground comics, there was a strict censorship system with Comics Code Authority. It can be said that this new comics wave started from the conflict with the harsh restrictions and counterculture movement in the 1960s. At that time, it was difficult to explain the anti-mainstream culture in the United States by some nature, including hippie culture, anti-war movements, black and female human rights issues, and questioning and resisting American traditional values. Above all, the underground comics movement is evaluated as a form of expression through which the artists sought to find their true colors in the medium. The study was able to reach the following conclusions through the analysis of representative underground comics of the time. Underground comics actively reflected the old superheros that were dominating the mainstream comic market and the stereotyped story line, cliché, and the good triumphing over the evil. It broke the long time stereotype of comics and actively applied the real social atmosphere from the inner truth. In addition, in order to avoid the censorship, a small number of self-publishing attempts were made, which provided artistic inspiration and a new production environment for the future comic industry and writers. Through the re-exploration of superheros, the movement played an important role in the birth of new superhero characters in the 1980s, laying the foundation for the diversity of comic media such as alternative comics and graphic novels. Modern comics artists advocate the legitimacy of literature and art, which can consolidate the social position of the media. Obviously, there is a credit for underground comics that resisted the mainstream culture in the past and tried to make their own voices.
