This study aims to identify the plasticity elements influencing character merchandise purchasethrough an analysis of consumer psychology, and to subsequently propose enhanced characterdevelopment strategies for merchandise. The survey targeted consumers in their 20s, 30s, andabove, and analyzed the influence of the plasticity elements of character design - color, shape, proportion, and expression - on character merchandise purchase. The results of the surveyanalysis indicated that, firstly, in terms of color preference by gender and age, females evaluatedthe color combination of characters as more important for perceiving characters as cute andpositive than males. Additionally, among age groups, those in their 20s were most sensitive tocolor and preferred innovative and unique color combinations. Secondly, in terms of shapepreference by gender and age, females perceived the shapes of the purchased charactermerchandise as cuter and softer than males. Furthermore, consumers aged 30 and aboveevaluated the softness of the characters more highly. Thirdly, in terms of proportion preferenceby gender and age, females were more likely to perceive the proportion of purchased charactermerchandise as cute. The 20s age group evaluated the highest preference for this characteristic. Fourthly, in terms of expression preference by gender and age, females evaluated theexpressions of the character merchandise they purchased as cuter and more fitting to thecharacter’s image than males. By age, the highest preference was found in the 20s. On the otherhand, male and older consumers preferred more neutral or traditional character merchandise. Thesurvey found that cuteness and liking are important elements in purchasing charactermerchandise. Moreover, functional usage is also a significant consideration for consumers. Theseresults suggest that a customized approach that considers consumer behavior, gender and age isimportant for the character design and marketing strategies of character merchandise.
