Abstract
As the accelerated aging process in South Korea, social policies and the elderly healthcare system are facing challenges. Elderly patients often encounter difficulties in wayfinding during their medical visits due to poor physical conditions and the complexity of hospital environments, making it difficult for them to quickly locate the appropriate departments. Therefore, developing an efficient wayfinding service has become an urgent issue. The study is framed by Weisman's wayfinding theory and employs a mixed-method approach. In the first stage, a literature review explores the advantages of AR technology in wayfinding service, supplemented by a survey that gathers elderly patients' demands and experiences in wayfinding. Additionally, in-depth interviews are conducted to analyze the specific challenges elderly patients face during wayfinding, providing valuable insights for the design of the AR wayfinding service. In the second stage, an integrated AR glasses-based wayfinding service design is proposed. The results of the study show that elderly patients face many challenges during hospital wayfinding. These challenges have a serious impact on the medical experience of elderly patients and the operational efficiency of hospitals. Therefore, the AR glasses wayfinding service solution proposed in this study can provide an intuitive and convenient wayfinding assistance for elderly patients by virtue of the core functions of real-time positioning and tracking, voice-assisted navigation, and display of target location information, which can reduce the difficulty of wayfinding and improve the convenience of medical treatment for elderly patients. According to the results of the questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews, elderly patients have a positive attitude toward AR technology. More than half of the respondents indicated that they would like to use AR glasses as a wayfinding tool in the future. The results of this study provide a new direction for the design of wayfinding services in the hospital environment.
