Abstract

According to data released by the World Health Organization in 2024, the global population aged 60 and above is projected to increase from 1 billion in 2019 to 2.1 billion by 2050. This significant demographic shift is expected to have far-reaching implications across various sectors, particularly healthcare and social care, which will need to adapt in order to better serve the rapidly growing elderly population. This study aims to optimize the design of hospital self-service terminals, focusing on elderly users and employing a grounded theory approach to identify the key factors that influence their interaction with these devices. The primary objective is to enhance the acceptance, usage, and overall efficiency of these self-service terminals among older adults, thereby encouraging their independent use on a more frequent basis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals aged 60 and above in Tianjin, China, to gather in-depth qualitative data and insights. The collected data were carefully analyzed using Nvivo 12.0 software for coding and qualitative analysis. The study closely examines several critical factors, such as device performance, cognitive comprehension, and interaction methods, to better understand the specific needs, preferences, and challenges faced by elderly users when operating hospital self-service terminals. Based on the findings, the research proposes several strategies for designing age-friendly hospital self-service terminals that are tailored to the cognitive and physical capabilities of elderly users, with the ultimate goal of enhancing their overall satisfaction with the devices. Key design elements are identified that can effectively reduce cognitive load, simplify interaction processes, and improve operational efficiency for older adults, making the terminals more accessible, user-friendly, and easier to navigate. The conclusions drawn from this study provide valuable insights that can inform the optimization of user experiences for elderly individuals, as well as contribute to the advancement of inclusive design practices for intelligent terminals in healthcare settings, benefiting not only elderly users but also the broader population.
