Abstract

This study analyzes the visual staging techniques used in the work <The Tide VR> to explore modern digital storytelling methods utilizing virtual reality technology. The main objective of the research is to thoroughly examine the effects of the 3D spatial staging techniques used in <The Tide VR> compared to traditional 2D-based VR comics and their impact on storytelling. The 2D multi-layer method has limitations in expressiveness, which restricts immersion and narrative delivery. In contrast, the 3D spatial staging technique enhances user immersion and provides a complex and multi-layered storytelling experience. Additionally, the Toon Shading technique transforms 3D models into a traditional comic style, offering users a familiar yet new visual experience. This study systematically compares various staging techniques in VR comics and provides practical guidelines for VR comic creators and digital storytelling researchers. The analysis reveals that 3D spatial staging significantly enhances user immersion and storytelling, whereas the 2D method shows clear limitations in these areas. Understanding how virtual reality technology reconstructs storytelling will contribute to expanding the boundaries of digital storytelling. This research explores the diverse possibilities of storytelling using VR technology and sheds light on the technological advancements and artistic potential of VR comics. The findings demonstrate how VR comics can transcend the traditional boundaries of storytelling, providing insights into maximizing the potential of virtual reality in storytelling. This will position VR comics as a key player in the future of digital storytelling. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of digital storytelling by proposing new forms of storytelling using virtual reality technology, which will be crucial for future digital content creation. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the role of VR technology in revolutionizing narrative techniques, highlighting its significance in the evolution of digital media. The study also suggests that VR comics could lead to innovative trends in digital storytelling.
