Abstract
The primary aim of this paper is to employ Freud's psychoanalytic theory as a methodological framework. By conducting a detailed case study of the Chinese animated films ‘Deep Sea’ and ‘I Am What I Am,’ the paper seeks to compare and contrast the developmental trajectories of the protagonists in these works, uncovering similarities and differences in character growth within various environments and realities. Animation, as an art form with characteristics of presenting reality's significance, also features unique elements like exaggerated expression, rich imagination, and high artistry, vividly illustrating character growth trajectories. This analysis offers practical value for the development of disadvantaged adolescent groups facing similar predicaments in real-life society. It holds practical significance in guiding these groups to navigate and overcome their challenges. Drawing on Freud’s theory, the paper analyzes changes in the protagonists’ ego, self, and superego during their growth processes. In ‘Deep Sea,’ the protagonist moves from self-avoidance to self-worth recognition through a deep-sea dream, while in ‘I Am What I Am,’ the protagonist finds self-identity by challenging himself in lion dance. These paths, though different, reflect the balanced relationship between self, ego, and superego. The paper also explores the protagonists’ self-identification and identity construction as disadvantaged groups in the films. Lastly, combining relevant sociological theories, it delves into the realistic dilemmas faced by disadvantaged adolescent groups in the films. The in-depth analyses of these dilemmas not only provide theoretical support for understanding the psychological and social problems of adolescents, but also provide a practical basis for helping adolescents in similar dilemmas to get out of their dilemmas in the real world.
