Abstract

Art reflects its era, and fiber art has historically been closely linked to women’s art. Feminism, as a body of theories addressing gender inequality, frames this connection. Thisstudy examines the evolution of fiber art through the lens of feminist history, divided intothree stages, and correlates these stages with the development of fiber art. The researchinvestigates, first, the social phenomena and characteristics evident in key fiber artworksfrom each feminist stage, and second, the relationship between fiber art and feministevolution. Adopting a phenomenological approach and using Feminist Standpoint Theory, interviews with five participants (fiber artists and feminist scholars) were analyzed withColaizzi’s seven-step method. Findings show that, in the first stage, fiber art’s traditionaldecorative qualities were influenced by historical traditions, social norms, and religion, reflecting the social roles and identities of women. In the second stage, fiber art began toengage with broader social movements, mirroring the second-wave feminist pursuit ofequality and challenge to gender norms. By the third stage, fiber art became a critical mediumfor diverse women artists to explore female identity and experiences, aligning withthird-wave feminism’s focus on diversity and ongoing equality. The study confirms theconnection between the development of fiber art and the progression of feminism, offeringvaluable new perspectives for research in this field.
