예술 재료로서 섬유가 지니는 의미적 특성 연구 -현대 작가들의 작품 분석을 중심으로

본 논문은 예술 재료로서 섬유가 지니는 상징적 의미를 세 가지로 특성화하고 현대 작가들의 작품 분석을 통해 연구한 것이다. 예술 표현 재료로서 섬유가 지니는 의미적 가치를 재조명하는 것을 연구 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 다음과 같다. 예술 재료로서 섬유의 개념과 20세기 이후 나타나는 섬유 표현의 변화 양상을 살펴본다. 그리고 섬유의 과거, 현재, 미래를 잇는 긴 시간성과 인간과 섬유의 관계를 기준으로 역사성, 일상성, 첨단성으로 나누고 이러한 특성이 드러나는 작품을 선정하여 작가의 의도를 중심으로 섬유가 지니는 의미적 특성을 살펴본다. 연구 범위는 20세기 이후부터 동시대 작품 중실, 천 등의 섬유 재료를 사용한 입체, 설치 작품으로 한정한다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 섬유는 문양이나 종류에 의해 역사적으로 특정 시대의 문화, 정치, 사회적 맥락을 내포하며, 과거와 현재를 잇는 가교가 되어 작가의 사유와 의식을 여러 층위로 담아내고 있었다. 둘째, 섬유는 일상 가까이존재하며 내면의 소소한 기억, 감정, 정서를 쉽게 투영하여 반영하고 있었다. 셋째, 섬유는 끊임없이신소재를 개발하는 첨단 영역으로 새로운 재료에 의한 예술 표현은 전통에 얽매이지 않은 미래적 표현을 가능하게 하였다. 이처럼 섬유는 부드러운 재질적 차원을 넘어 인간 삶과 관련한 내용을 반영할수 있는 의미를 지닌 재료로 거대한 역사적 맥락에서부터 개인적이고 내적인 영역, 그리고 미래적인첨단의 표현까지 아우르는 다양한 층위의 잠재력을 지닌 예술 재료임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구가 예술표현 재료로서 섬유의 의미적 가치를 재조명하기를 기대한다.
Abstract
The thesis characterizes the symbolic meaning of textiles as an art material in three ways, and this study was conducted through analysis of the works of contemporary artists. The purpose of this study is to re-examine the semantic value of textiles as a material for artistic expression. The research method is as follows. This examines the concept of textile as an art material and changes in textile expression that appear after the 20th century. In addition, it is divided into historicity, daily life, and high-tech based on the long-term linking the past, present and future of fiber and the relationship between humans and textiles. Select works that reveal these characteristics and examine the semantic characteristics of textiles focusing on the artist’s intentions. The scope of research is limited to three-dimensional and installation works using textile materials such as thread and cloth among contemporary works from the 20th century onwards. The results of the study are as follows. First, textiles contain the cultural, political, and social contexts of a specific era historically by their patterns or types, and as a bridge between the past and the present, the artist’s thoughts were contained in various layers. Second, textiles exist close to our daily lives and easily reflect our small inner memories and emotions. Third, textiles are a high-tech field that constantly develops new materials, and artistic expression using new materials made it possible to express the future without being bound by tradition. As we have seen, textile is a material with a meaning that can reflect the contents of human life beyond the soft material dimension. It is an art material with various layers of potential, ranging from a huge historical context to a personal and internal realm, and a futuristic expression. It is expected that this study will shed new light on the semantic value of textiles as a material for artistic expression. It is also expected that this study will provide a direction that can be approached from an expanded perspective in the production and research of textile works.
